Boatmaster (Master under 200GT in Near Coastal Area)

The Boatmaster is a qualification that will ensure that the person in command of Small Commercial Vessels less than 200 Gross Tonnage, operating on near-coastal voyages in accordance with STCW 1978 as amended, Regulation II/3-7, meet the standards of competence and proficiency set out in relevant STCW regulations.

Introduction:

The Boatmaster is a qualification that will ensure that the person in command of Small Commercial Vessels less than 200 Gross Tonnage, operating on near-coastal voyages in accordance with STCW 1978 as amended, Regulation II/3-7, meet the standards of competence and proficiency set out in relevant STCW regulations.

In meeting the STCW standards, allowance for the size of vessel and its operating area are applied.

This qualification carries the following limitations:

Operating Area:

The operating area is limited to Near Coastal Voyages

Type of Vessel:

This qualification does not qualify for work on Oil, Gas, or Chemical Tankers

Course Content:

Note: Duration of the elements is based on a 6 hour day and are approximate. Total time for underpinning knowledge (items 1 to 11) is 25 days.

Course Details

Course Duration

5 to 7 weeks dependent on prior qualifications, days.

  • STCW Basic Fire Fighting
  • STCW Personal Survival
  • STCW First Aid
  • STCW Personal safety & social responsibility
  • STCW Security awareness training
  • GMDSS ROC (Restricted Operator Certificate), or higher

Assessment:

All Theory examinations will be conducted under the supervision of the MoEI.

The summative Oral examination, of candidates who have successfully completed the training programme, will be carried out by the MoEI in accordance with the qualifications syllabus.

Attendance:

100% attendance is required.

Entry Requirements:

Candidates must provide evidence of the following on application to enrol on the course:

  • Proof of age (passport or ID)
  • High School Certificate (if not available a testimonial stating the duration and experience of the candidate in maritime employment – Note: this option is time limited and will cease to be available after October 2021)
  • Certificate of Proficiency in English – The certificate should be from an approved English language testing centre meeting IELTS Level 4, EMSAT 875 points, or the Marlins/ISF English test or proof of English as native language (Passport)
  • A Seafarers Medical and Eyesight Test – From an MoEI approved medical centre
