The aim of this certificate Shipping Law is to provide candidates with a thorough knowledge on the legal, economic, operational and commercial aspects of the shipping industry followed by a comprehensive and practical insight into the specialist subject of Shipping Law.

Programme Aim:

The aim of this programme in Shipping Law is to provide candidates with a thorough knowledge on the legal, economic, operational and commercial aspects of the shipping industry followed by a comprehensive and practical insight into the specialist subject of Shipping Law. The course aims to develop professionals who have the appropriate and relevant general and specialist knowledge in relation to Maritime Law, and are able to address the legal and commercial basis of shipping contracts and examine in detail sale of goods contracts, Charter parties and Bills of Lading along with the special shipping terms they incorporate.

Programme Structure:

The programme comprises five (05) modules. The first four modules are the four compulsory Group-1 subjects of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) U.K as follows:

  • Introduction to Shipping
  • Economics of Sea Transport & International Trade
  • Legal Principles in Shipping Business
  • Shipping Business

The fifth module is “Shipping Law” – the Group-2 specialist subject of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) U.K. covering the following key topics:

  • Ship ownership and Admiralty jurisdiction
  • Legal aspects of charter parties
  • Legal aspects time/bareboat charter parties
  • Legal aspects of bills of lading
  • Convention on Carriage of Goods by Sea
  • General Average, Salvage & Towage
  • Collision
  • Pollution and environment
  • Shipowner limitation of liability
  • Dispute resolution

On successful completion of the programme, learners will:

  • Develop an understanding of the fundamental basis of Maritime Law and provide complete knowledge of shipping contracts like time & voyage charter parties.
  • Have knowledge of the rights and obligations of parties under the bills of lading & contract for the carriage of goods and sale of goods.

Programme Outcomes:

  1. Level -5 Award in Maritime Logistics Management (Shipping Law): 

On successful completion of the programme comprising the five (05) modules, a Level -5 Award in Maritime Logistics Management (Shipping Law) will be issued by the Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy (ADMA), approved by the National Qualification Centre (NQC) Ministry of Education, U.A.E. The Level-5 Award certificate will provide details of the topics that are covered and certify that the holder of the certificate has completed forty credits (600 hours) of structured learning in Shipping Law.

  1. Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) U.K. Foundation Diploma / Advanced Diploma:

Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy (ADMA) is a Registered Training Provider (RTP) of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) U.K.  On completion of the programme, the candidates may appear in the examinations of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) U.K conducted at the Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy (ADMA) in May and November every year. Upon passing these examinations, the candidates could obtain the internationally acclaimed Foundation Diploma / Advanced Diploma from the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) U.K. This may lead to the prestigious full Membership of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (MICS) U.K on passing the ICS Professional Qualifying Examinations (PQE).

Programme Details:

Duration:

The programme duration is six hundred (600) hours comprising four hundred and fifty (450) hours of classroom / online teaching, assignments, case studies and presentation spread over thirty (30) weeks and one hundred and fifty (150) hours of workplace attachment spread over ten (10) weeks. The classes will be conducted from Monday to Friday every week from 0800 hours to 1100 hours or 1600 hours to 1900 hours.

Assessment:

Written assessments comprising subjective questions as well as quizzes, assignments and case studies with 60% pass marks.

Attendance:

90% attendance is required.

Entry Requirements:

Preferred entry requirement is a Bachelor degree in any discipline. Minimum entry requirement is twelve years of structured education or Advanced Level (A’Level). A good working knowledge of written and spoken English with a minimum IELTS Level-5 or equivalent is required.

Accreditation:

ICS accredited & NQC approved as Level-5 Award.
